Traditional shiplap has a rabbet (or groove) cut into the top and bottom, which allows the pieces to fit together snugly, forming a tight seal. WebCan't add pics so a description: hatch door is 3/4 mdf with a shiplap front, overlapping on all sides of the mdf by 2 or 3 inches. The mdf fits snugly inside the hatch hole and the shiplap gets screwed through the molding around the hatch into the wall. Hole is about 2 ft by 2.5 ft., framed on all 4 sides by 1/2 inch molding and 2x4 studs/header.
